In the Indus Valley, houses looked very similar to how certain houses look today. They were made of baked-brick and either one to two stories high. Some homes had a flat roof on top that acted like a third floor, which they used for eating and possibly for storage. Like many, the first settlers in India settled along the rivers. They did this because the rivers provided lots of water for farming and travel. Men and women wore colorful robes with jewelry of precious golds and stones. Some women even wore lipstick at times. For entertainment, researchers found a beautiful small bronze dancer, which shows the Indian people must have liked dance. There was also a big bath found, which seems to be used as a town pool or a place for ceremonies. Farmers grew food like barley, peas, melons, bread or wheat, and dates. Farmers also raised cotton and stored their grain in a central storage building in each town.
The social structure in India was very organized. Ancient India called it’s well-organized social classes, the caste system. There were five groups of people designated into their certain social class. The first social class was the Brahmins. These people were said to be the highest group in the caste system. They were most likely priests and religious scholars. The next people in line were the Kshatriyas. They were rulers and warriors. Next, was the Vaishyas. These people were most likely herders of cattle and merchants. The next group was the Shudras. They were servants. Even though this may seem like the worst job, the last group on the caste system was the untouchables. Their jobs and ways of living were considered “dirty” to the Hindus. Every person in this caste system has a job, but not everybody is treated equally.
